Understanding Gemstones

Understanding Gemstones: Natural, Lab-Grown & Simulated

Gemstones come in an incredible variety of colors, compositions, and origins. Some form naturally within the Earth over millions of years, while others are created in laboratories or manufactured to recreate the appearance of a natural gem.

At The Raz Co., we believe that understanding these differences helps you shop with confidence and choose jewelry that suits your style, preferences, and budget.

What Are Natural Gemstones?

Natural gemstones form through geological processes in the Earth. Heat, pressure, mineral-rich fluids, and other natural conditions help create the crystals and minerals used in jewelry.

Natural gemstones are mined or collected, then cut and polished to bring out their color and beauty. Some undergo treatments to improve their appearance, so natural stones are not necessarily untreated.

Examples include amethyst, sapphire, ruby, emerald, garnet, and aquamarine.

What Are Lab-Grown Gemstones?

Lab-grown gemstones are created in controlled laboratory environments using processes that reproduce the conditions needed for crystal growth.

When a lab-grown stone is the same gemstone as its natural counterpart, it has essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and key physical properties.

For example, lab-grown sapphires are sapphires, and lab-grown rubies are rubies. Their origin is different, but the underlying gemstone material is essentially the same.

Lab-grown gemstones can offer beautiful color and quality at different price points. Their value and characteristics depend on the specific material, quality, and manufacturing process.

What Are Simulated Gemstones?

Simulated gemstones are materials designed to resemble the appearance of another gemstone without having the same composition.

Cubic zirconia (CZ), for example, is a popular man-made material used to imitate the look of a diamond. It offers brilliant sparkle at an accessible price.

Moissanite is another popular gemstone material used in jewelry. It has its own distinct composition and optical properties, including impressive brilliance and colorful flashes of light.

Other simulants and imitations may include glass and various manufactured materials. Their quality, durability, and appearance can vary significantly.

Remember: Simulated does not automatically mean low quality. The important thing is understanding what the material actually is and how it performs.

What Is the Difference Between Treated and Untreated Gemstones?

Some gemstones receive treatments to enhance their color, clarity, or overall appearance.

Common examples include heat treatment, which can improve or alter color, and filling treatments, which may make certain visible fractures or inclusions less noticeable.

Treatments are common in the gemstone industry, but they can affect a stone's care requirements and value.

Whenever treatment information is available, it is helpful to understand what has been done to a gemstone before purchasing it.

Does a More Expensive Gemstone Always Mean Better Quality?

Not necessarily!

Price can be influenced by many factors, including:

  • The type of gemstone and its rarity.
  • Color, clarity, cut, and overall appearance.
  • Durability and suitability for everyday wear.
  • Natural, laboratory-grown, or simulated origin.
  • Treatments, craftsmanship, and the quality of the jewelry setting.

The best choice depends on what matters most to you. Some shoppers prioritize natural origin, while others prefer the durability, appearance, or affordability of laboratory-created and simulated materials.

How Do You Choose the Right Gemstone?

Before purchasing a piece of gemstone jewelry, consider these questions:

  • What material is the gemstone made from?
  • Is it natural, lab-grown, treated, or simulated?
  • What are its durability and care requirements?
  • Does the product description clearly identify the stone?
  • Does the piece fit your personal style and budget?

Reading the product details carefully can help you make an informed decision and find jewelry you'll enjoy wearing.
